Trends & Notifications
The Spotinst Cloud Analyzer’s Trends & Notifications dashboard identifies trends and irregularities in cloud spend across cloud providers and accounts via custom or predefined parameters.
The Top Trends graph shows cloud account spend over time and highlights irregular events. The graph represents each Cloud Account selected in the “accounts” dropdown with a different color, and can be filtered by timeframe. Accounts can be quickly added or removed from the view via the color legend.
Below the graph you will find a list of top events, which shows the most recent ones. Individual events can be opened for further investigation, and subsequently dismissed to be stored in the archive, by selecting their checkbox and using the “Archive” button.
Clicking on the “Event Definition” button on the top right will bring you to the list of Events defined for your Organization, where each one can be switched on or off via the Status switch on the right.
Spotinst provides 3 predefined event definitions, for Daily, Weekly and Monthly detection.
In addition to those, you have the ability to add custom event definitions, which help tailor the tool to your individual needs.
New Event Definition
To add new event definition, enter the Event Definition view, and click the Create New Definition button.
Fill out the wizard, starting with a name and an optional description.
Events are defined on tagged resources by defining a Tag Key and Tag Value pair and can be of a daily, weekly or monthly scope. Finally, set the threshold for the event.
If costs for the current period (as defined in the scope) are higher or lower than the average for the previous 5 periods by the percentage set in the threshold, an event is triggered (daily events take into account the past 5 occurrences of the same day of the week).
Cost decreases can be optionally ignored by selecting the “Ignore Cost Decrease” checkbox on the bottom right.
Event Drill down
When you click on a specific event, you’ll be taken to the drill down view. The event’s drill down page (see screenshot below) contains details that help understand the event and break it down into its underlying causes.
First, a summary line details the observed values that triggered the event, with expected vs actual costs as well as the difference in percentage.
Next, a trends graph highlights the historical spending trend leading up to the event.
Below that, the Cost Breakdown table shows the different cost components that add up to the overall spend increase or decrease. Each individual component shows its own change in percentage which makes it possible to single out the services that have the biggest impact on the event and focus on those.
In addition, a comments section allows users to coordinate and discuss the individual event.
When an event is considered handled, you can Archive it via the top right button. This will remove the event from the list of top events of the main Trends & Notifications view.
Clicking on the View All events button at the bottom of the main Trends & Notifications view takes you to the events archive. Both active events from the “Top Events” section of the main view, and archived events appear here.
The events list can be searched by tags, attributes or keywords, and filtered by time.
In addition, individual events can re-activated or archived from this view directly by selecting them and clicking the appropriate action on the top right.
